Faking the Feelings of Fall

DSC_0091

I’ve dreaded this day. The cold is coming, and that is a terrible thought.

TIP: Don’t buy the Amazon version, it has way too short of wireless range for a 50mm lens.

Despite my misgivings about the day, and the actual temperature,  I pulled together a fall outfit. While I continue to hate the idea of fall, today’s gloomy but cozy setting was pretty ideal. Looking at these photos now I realize that today was a decidedly causal day. I guess that’s what sneakers will do to an outfit, and refusing to get out my jammies. I will say it was worth it, gosh was I comfy all day. These poor beautiful sneakers have been waiting patiently on my shelf. Looks like I just needed the reminder that cold weather will eventually happen to give up the fight of not wearing socks.

I’ve been die hard into summer and stubborn about its disappearance. Currently, two full outfit photo shoots reside waiting to be dealt with in my lightroom and in neither of them am I wearing any shoes! An accident, but certainly shows my feelings: Who needs shoes when the sun is shining.

October, and coincidentally fall, bring an exciting number of projects and ideas to my little patch of world. Since I finished school I have missed the grand changes a season can bring. This fall I am completely embracing the new sense of purpose that has slowly been building. I’m gonna make some awesome shit and tote around my camera and hopefully step out of my comfort zone. Cause everything is awesome. Stellar movie, by the way.

Market Morning & Tips for Shopping At Loft

I could probably sleep through an explosion of fireworks in my backyard if I felt like it. Which makes weekend mornings like this one quite rare for me. We got up bright and early, or more around 10 am, and sleepily wandered down to the Farmers Market. In a compromise to waking up before noon I just rolled out and went. No time spent fussing about my looks.

Sugared Rush

For off-the-cuff stylish looks, I have always dreamt of the perfect basic striped shirt. Pintrest has completely convinced me that they are possibly the most offhandedly stylish piece in a wardrobe. So I was pretty psyched to finally acquire one. This isn’t the basic stripe piece I had in my head, but I could not believe how awesome the lace shoulder add-ons were. I had a brilliant day browsing the sale racks at LOFT a few weeks ago and this was not the only steal I fell in love with. The stripes caught my eye, but the weight of the shirt material is what prompted me to try it on. I am quite over the paperthin pieces that seem to be all I can find in most clothing retailers.

The past few months I have window shopped the LOFT weekly emails, but this was my first foray into the store. I was worried about being able to find clothes that would easily fit my small frame. I have had a decent amount of bad luck previously with labels who’s main client base is middle-aged. Walking-in I completely loved their fresh and lightly colored spring collection. The feel is certainly along the lines I’ve been feeling for spring. I tried on a lot of clothes (which I always recommend, you won’t know how great it is until you try it on!) Below are some tips I picked up:

Tips for Shopping at LOFT:

  1. Pay attention to their sale patterns
    • I chose to go shopping when they were having a 50% on everything promotion. Since I’ve been signed up for their emails, I knew that 40% on everything was a common promotion, so this week was outside the norm. The great part was that the 40% still applied to sale merch. This meant I got a really great deal overall.
  2. Shop Petite
    • If you’re 5′ 4″ and shorter, OR taller but with a short torso or legs you should be checking out the petite section. Sorry to those who don’t have this option! I found that the petite sale selection was nearly untouched and that’s where I snagged this striped top. The great thing is if you really need the shorter proportions, they have nearly all of their items available in petite online. Online returns to the store are really easy, so get thee to the webz!
  3. Try a classic bottom & top piece for fit
    • I’m a firm believer in ignoring size labels. Lately, every fashion house will fit you differently and you need to be aware of those nuances. Thankfully I found LOFT to have uniform sizing in all the styles I tried on. I recommend the first two pieces you grab for are a classic top and a classic bottom in two or three sizes. Choose whatever your go-to piece for each body part is; I picked an adorable white pencil skirt and a lightly embellished t-shirt. You’ll never see them on this blog because I didn’t buy them,  this fitting should be quick and easy so don’t worry about hunting for pieces you like.
  4. Think twice about the sale section
    • I noticed that a number of “sale” items had only been discounted 10%. Always check yourself that you’re purchasing something because you truly love it, and not just because it’s on sale. That “sale” can often be used as a gimmick, and 10% is one of the worst tricks I’ve seen. As a marketer and bargainess, I am both amazed and appalled by their audacity.
  5. Talk with the sales people
    • I prefer to be in my own bubble when shopping so I did not do this tip when I visited. After talking to friends about my awesome experience at LOFT I got the resounding reply that they are always alerted to great deals by the sales girls. They’ll also have the best idea about how a piece of clothing will fit, but I recommend asking about a piece before you try it on. You’ll get a more honest idea or some helpful styling suggestions.

I carried my camera around the little market for most of the morning, but was pretty psyched to convince M to take it and snap a few pictures for me. I just got a 35 mm f/2.0 lens that doesn’t autofocus with my body, so it’s no easy tech for a non-photog to pick up. I think he did pretty good for his first time. I know I won’t want to give up the camera reigns for this blog, but I’m hoping that eventually my photography love will rub off on him a bit. Overtime at least. And probably by force.

In Love: Corduroy Flares

green corduroy, cords, wedges, blazer, stripes, outift

I had the most momentous exciting day yesterday! I had my last official day at the fun job I’ve held for nearly 8 years. It feels like such an end of an era, I’m not really sure what to do with myself. I’ve needed to remind myself that leaving this job is such a good thing, because tomorrow I start full time at my degree related big-kid job! So in honor of that, I present to you my favorite work outfit I’ve worn recently.

I have heard a little whisper around the webs lately (mostly just repeated over and over by Kendi) that flare jeans are making a come back. If these gorgeous cords are any indication, I am 100% for this switch. Though I could never fully abandon my skinnies, I love that these corduroy flares give me a great excuse to wear my wedge booties. And did you catch the corduroy part. Absolutely in love. I think I certainly take pet-ability into account when deciding my favorite closet pieces.

OUTFIT TIP: Think Proportions.

The top half of these cords are quite tight on my booty, so I chose a looser top to balance that out. The floaty top also helps cover up any bulges that might occur with daily movement (with pants these tight, its bound to happen). For this outfit, I kinda thought of a sammich. Loose and floaty on top and bottom, and held together with some great butt hugging glue in the middle. Weird reference, I know.

P.S. I’m still going strong with Manual March! I’ll tell you more about it coming up, but I think I’ve already learned a lot. And I really found it helpful when setting the exposure for myself and not the bright backgrounds in these photos.

Golden Flashback

stripes, yellow, cardigan, grey, skirt  stripes, yellow, cardigan, grey, skirt stripes, yellow, cardigan, grey, skirtI spent this weekend running around at an informal family reunion in Salt Lake City. It was wonderful to see the side of my family that is usually lost in the back of my mind and rarely seen in person. Growing up my immediate family never put much emphasis on general family time. Family seemed to come second to the myriad of other equally important events going on in our busy lives. This has developed in me the opposite desire. I wish too keep my family close. I look forward to when I can have my own household with family game nights and big holiday gatherings. I want to grow a community around me, and that goes beyond whatever blood I may perpetuate. Someday I just want a house overflowing with love.

While I was galavanting, or more so sitting, around with my family I failed to take any photos, outfit or otherwise. This doesn’t bode well for my new years goals, but I don’t want to be down on myself. Instead, I see it as just another motivation to be better in the future. So I leave you with this beautifully sun dreaming photo set from what seems like forever ago. It took forever for winter to hit us this year, so these pictures were taken on an extremely warm week in the beginning of October. I was so glad to just be out in the sunshine, I spent quite a long while playing around with my camera.

These take the cake for my favorite outfit photos yet. I had been dying to share this top on here, only to accidentally spill tye-die on it right before I really started blogging. I spent over an hour trying to pull all of the color out of it, and managed to do a pretty good job. I still liked hiding the “ruined” part away in this perfect skirt. The skirt is my prime example of why you should never give much heed to the size number on an item. It is a large from F21, which is not my size, but I can only guess that it was suppose to be high-waisted, because sitting right on my hips it fits just perfectly.stripes, yellow, cardigan, grey, skirtstripes, yellow, cardigan, grey, skirt

Discovering Overalls

Tights, Overalls, Denim, Chambray, Red, Stripes

I was so stoked on yesterday. I was awaiting an early morning call to run up the ski hill that never came so I wasted away my morning lounging in bed. I always have every intention to jump up and get running with my day, but the lure of my cozy bed is always too much to let me move. I also had every intention to get outside for a (cold) run. Instead I enjoyed a a lazy morning, breakfast with my guy, and a day running about like kids at the Discovery Center.Tights, Overalls, Denim, Chambray, Red, Stripes

Today was the first in a series of free Sunday’s at our local Discovery Center, so I made sure to make a visit. Who doesn’t love free things. They just celebrated their 25th anniversary, so the front area was filled with classic experiments that they’ve had over the years. I’m just sad I missed the liquid nitrogen ice cream they had at the official celebration. Since I felt like I was going on a kids outing, I got dolled up with little kid in mind.Tights, Overalls, Denim, Chambray, Red, Stripes

I just got these overalls while on a shopping run with friends. I love going out with them because we always just go to Plato’s closet and joke around over the wonderful, and hilarious things we find there. The best part about the place is we walk out with a cool little selection of clothes, all at a very reasonable budget. Debating whether the $10 sweater is worth the price always feels great but absurd. If you want recent fashion on a budget, I highly recommend it. This trip I managed to grab a few of my wishlist pieces, one of which is this Heritage denim shirt! The perfect chambray shirt has been on my wishlist for ages while I’ve had no luck locating one. Now I managed to acquire two in one evening! Pretty much a perfect way to begin 2014.Tights, Overalls, Denim, Chambray, Red, StripesTights, Overalls, Denim, Chambray, Red, Stripes
